NHI Case Study

Launched in February 2008, www.tamusa.org gives National Hospitality Institute (NHI) a flexible, interactive tool for managing its Techniques of Alcohol Management (TAM) training program.

Problem:

NHI wanted an online training system to simplify its TAM program. However, the full capabilities of the site were anything but simple. In addition to providing online courses and test modules for multiple states, the site also needed to help restaurant owners enroll and monitor their staff and allow NHI to edit or update course material and tests on a frequent basis.

Solution:

We began with a secure, role-based login which directs each audience to the site tools they need while protecting sensitive information from unauthorized users. Straightforward design and wording combine with drop-down menus and pre-populating forms to help all users navigate easily.

Restaurant owners who visit the site can sign up staff members and view, add to, or edit their staff registration list. They can also search for local training and proctors, view the training status and test results of each employee, and print a proof of course completion for any staff member. To simplify payment for online courses, we integrated with a third-party gateway for real time credit card authorization.

When restaurant staff log in, they can search and sign up for online courses, search for local seminars and test proctors, and begin or return to training programs. We designed coursework with interactive features on each page, forward and backward navigation, and built in a tool to keep track of the percentage of work complete. Students can also take certification tests and view their test scores online. When the training is complete, they may print their proof of course completion or order replacement cards.

Using their secure login, NHI administration can use the site to manage and update the training program, including courses, tests, and restaurant owner, staff, and proctor information. Management options include searching, editing, activating, or deactivating accounts, as well as creating discounts. Administrators can also add, edit, or delete the online tests or sections of tests. Furthermore, they can organize and edit individual courses to customize them for each state.
